Sudan is a country in crisis. In October 2025, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) seized full control of El Fasher in North Darfur, Sudan - deepening conflict that intensified with clashes on April 15, 2023. Violence has already displaced over 12 million people, aid access remains blocked, and nearly 24 million people are now food insecure. It’s been deemed the worst humanitarian crisis in the world.
The current crisis in Sudan echoes the atrocities of the early 2000s in Darfur, when government-backed Janjaweed militias carried out widespread campaigns of violence, mass displacement, and ethnic cleansing, particularly targeting non-Arab communities. That conflict led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands and the displacement of millions. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), central to today’s violence, evolved from the Janjaweed and are now accused of repeating the same patterns of ethnically motivated atrocities, with even greater impunity.
War Child Canada has been operating in Sudan for over 18 years. Operations paused in 2023 as violence intensified and our staff needed to protect their families. In 2025, we returned, with teams working to re-establish our presence and strengthen relationships with key stakeholders, including government authorities. In October 2025, our legal registration was reinstated and we are planning a rapid assessment to identify priority areas for intervention.
Prior to 2023, War Child supported food security, livelihoods, and economic empowerment in West Darfur. Over the next two years, we will rebuild education, restore safe learning spaces and partner with local leaders so children and families can envision more than displacement.
We hope that you will consider supporting War Child’s efforts at this critical time.
