A Mother's Love Knows No Borders

War Child is deeply committed to empowering mothers affected by conflict and displacement—recognizing that when mothers thrive, families and communities thrive. Our programming supports mothers as caregivers, earners, and rights-holders, helping them overcome the unique challenges they face in conflict-affected settings.
More than 60 million women have been forced to flee their homes across the world, and War Child is on the ground in post- and current conflict zones offering support for mothers. We help them finish their education, train in business skills, and develop tools they can use to build hope for their children, families, and communities.

Our Support for Mothers Includes:

👩‍👧 Parenting and Psychosocial Support
We provide trauma-informed parenting programs and psychosocial services to help mothers manage stress, strengthen their relationships with their children, and build emotional resilience in the face of adversity.
📚 Education and Literacy
Many mothers in the communities we serve were denied access to education. Through adult literacy and life skills programs, we give mothers the tools they need to support their children’s learning and advocate for their rights.
đź’Ľ Livelihoods and Economic Empowerment
War Child supports mothers with vocational training, small business support, and access to savings and loan groups—helping them build economic independence and provide for their families.
⚖️ Protection
We work to uphold mothers’ rights and safety, both within the home and in their broader communities.

In Afghanistan
we offer child friendly spaces for children to learn and play while their mothers attend activities at our health centres. Our Mother and Child health centres offer maternal care, health referrals, psychosocial support, and community building groups.

In South Sudan,
young mothers can return to school with support from accelerated learning program initiatives to care for small children while their mothers learn, or for students to bring small children to class. Mothers involved with our FEEDII program gained tangible skills and resources to start their own businesses, join community savings and loans groups, and bolster their economic capacity to better care for their families. We promote positive changes in attitudes and behaviors toward women and gender equality, particularly by engaging men and boys. In a direct support to mothers, the project also specifically targeted pregnant and lactating women through nutrition training sessions focused on Maternal, Infant, and Young Child Feeding (MIYCF).
