INUKA: Youth-Led Innovation in the Democratic Republic of Congo

INUKA is War Child’s youth innovation and entrepreneurship program in the Democratic Republic of Congo, designed to help young people transform community challenges into sustainable, income-generating solutions.

Implemented in Kinshasa’s communes of Masina, Lemba, and Ngaliema, INUKA equips youth with the skills, mentorship, and seed funding they need to turn ideas into action—and leadership into livelihoods.

How INUKA Works

  1. Youth Selection
Young innovators living in Masina, Lemba, and Ngaliema apply to the program. From these applications, 12 youth groups are selected based on the strength and relevance of their ideas.
  2. INUKA Bootcamp (UPSHIFT Training)
Selected groups participate in an intensive UPSHIFT bootcamp, where they learn to identify local problems, design innovative solutions, and develop projects that can generate income and social impact.
  3. Pitch & Selection
In February, all 12 groups present their projects to a Selection Committee. Six groups are chosen to move forward based on innovation, feasibility, and potential impact.
  4. Seed Funding
Each selected group receives up to USD 1,000 in seed funding to launch and test their solution.
  5. Mentorship & Skills Development
The six funded groups receive ongoing mentorship, as well as training in entrepreneurship and life skills, with continued support from War Child and local partners throughout implementation.

Why INUKA Matters

In a country where youth face high unemployment and limited opportunities, INUKA helps young people become problem-solvers, entrepreneurs, and community leaders. By combining innovation with practical business skills, the program supports youth to build sustainable futures - for themselves and their communities.
