On GivingTuesday, we’re asking you to make a donation that will let war-affected girls like Afra* reclaim their childhood. Let’s get childhood back on track.
Why are Sudanese girls like Afra unable to access an education without your help?
The humanitarian crisis in Sudan continues to prevent nearly 700,000 children from accessing their most basic needs such as healthcare and education, marking it as one of the worst environments for children in the world (UNICEF). For those of us living in relative safety and comfort with the ability to give, all of this can seem remote and distant. But for 8-year-old Afra, it is the reality of her daily life in Sudan.
Afra grew up in West Darfur, Sudan with her two brothers and three sisters. She was in the second grade when, like too many girls her age, she was forced to quit her studies and help support her family.
All of that changed when a teacher came to her home and told her about War Child’s free Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) that helps children, just like her, catch up on years of missed education. Not only were the sessions in the evening, but school supplies and the lessons were free.
Today, Afra is back in school and has just passed her grade 4 exams. She loves writing poetry and dreams of one day becoming a teacher. Afra is eager to share the news of this transformative program: “I say to my friends go and study at ALP centers… if you left school at grade two, after study at ALP centers, you come back to school at grade four. This is good.”
Their childhood can’t wait – and neither should you.
Children like Afra deserve a childhood. They have a right to go to school and to play safely. They should be empowered to dream of becoming educators, leaders and change-makers in their communities.
That’s why this GivingTuesday, in honour of Afra and the millions of children like her living with the impact of war, we ask you to #BitetheBullet and make a donation to War Child.
Until December 31st, your donation will be tripled!
Don’t forget that through the generosity of our government and institutional donors, until December 31st, your donation will be matched, meaning for every $1 you give, $3.50 goes to supporting War Child programs overseas. TRIPLE your impact by donating today.
